Bath is a stunning historic city known for its Georgian architecture and cultural landmarks. With a range of incredible sights to see across the city, there is also a range of unique ways to see them. Here is a quick guide to some alternative and adventurous ways to explore Bath.
Tackle the Bath Skyline Walk
If you’re up for a challenge, the Bath Skyline Walk is the perfect adventure. This 6-mile trail offers not just an exciting hike, but a great opportunity to take in our beautiful city from a different perspective. The terrain varies from ancient woodlands to meadows and farms, all with a lovely view of Bath and it’s surrounding areas. Best of all, it’s free! Remember to bring lots of water and snacks!
Paddleboarding/Kayaking on the River Avon
One of the best ways to explore the city is by water. The River Avon runs through the city centre and gives a unique perspective of popular landmarks such as Pultney Bridge and the weir. There are multiple places you can rent paddleboards or kayaks to explore the river, such as Bath Paddleboard Centre and Original Wild. Original Wild also offers group activities, with huge paddleboards for multiple people. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can even do a charity abseil with them and raise funds for our charitable work at YMCA Brunel Group!
Cycle the Kennet and Avon Canal
For those who prefer two wheels, cycling along the Kennet and Avon Canal is a must-do. This scenic route offers a mix of serenity and adventure, as you pedal alongside narrowboats and through charming villages. Rent a bike from Green Park Bike Station and set off towards Bradford-on-Avon. The path is mostly flat but offers the challenge of navigating canal locks and the occasional bridge crossing. Stop for a quick dip in the river or a bite at a local pub before heading back.
Wild Swimming at Warleigh Weir
Take the plunge with a wild swim at Warleigh Weir. Located just outside Bath, this popular spot offers cool, clear waters surrounded by lush greenery. The weir itself creates a natural pool, perfect for a refreshing dip. It’s a refreshing experience, especially on a hot summer day. Just remember to swim responsibly and be aware of the currents. Warleigh Weir can also get quite crowded on a hot day, so bear this in mind when planning your day out.
Sunset at Solsbury Hill
If you love a good sunset, Solsbury Hill is one of the best spots in Bath to catch a fantastic sunset overlooking the city and lovely surrounding valleys. Be sure to set off with plenty of time to get settled before sunset, bring a picnic to enjoy while you’re up there, and some torches for the walk back. There are multiple paths you can take to the top, you might even come across some alpacas if you are lucky! The hike itself is moderate, but the real reward comes when you reach the top: a panoramic view of Bath illuminated by a glorious sunset. When night falls, you have the glow of the city lights below. On a clear night, the stars add to the magic. It’s a unique way to experience Bath’s natural beauty after dark. Be sure to remember your torches so that you get back safely!
