If you’re staying with us at the YMCA Bath Hostel and looking for great food without blowing your budget, Bath has some excellent independent cafés and restaurants that serve up flavour, personality and value. Here are six local favourites — ideal for a tasty, affordable bite.

1. Chai Walla

The best hole in the wall hidden gem in Bath. Chai Walla is an Indian street-food style spot that offers Indian-style wraps, lifechanging samosas and curry boxes- all budget friendly prices. Their vegetarian, vegan and halal-friendly options mean it’s accessible for everyone. The samosas are the perfect snack if you are not wanting a full meal but a substantial snack. There is no indoor seating, so grab something and enjoy on one of the many benches in Kingsmead Square or the nearby Queen Square.

2. Taylors Bagels

For something grab-and-go or a relaxed brunch, Taylors Bagels is a no brainer. They bake their bagels inhouse and fill them with delicious combinations – from classic cream cheese & salmon to hearty lunch bagels.

3. Solina Pasta

If you’re craving something a little more “sit down” but still reasonable, Solina on Grand Parade is a strong choice. They make their pastas in house, offer dishes at accessible prices, and offer atmosphere in the beautiful light Georgian building overlooking the Weir & Pulteney Bridge. Famous for its Beef Ragu and Tiramisu, Solana has plenty of Vegetarian and Vegan options- making it an accessible and affordable place to enjoy.

4. Landrace Bakery

This artisan bakery on Walcot Street is perfect for breakfast or a sweet treat. Known especially for their cardamom & cinnamon buns and great quality bread, it’s a lovely place to grab something sweet or savoury without spending a fortune.

5. Milk Bun Deli

Milk Bun Deli has become one of the go-to lunch spots in Bath, which is famous for the fluffy white bread delicious sandwiches. The perfect easy yet filling lunch spot in the heart of Bath. Limited seating so best to takeaway and enjoy on a bench in the nearby Queen Square.

6. Green Bird Café

A little off-the-tourist-trail, Green Bird Café is locally loved for relaxed vibes, good coffee and simple yet reliably good food. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and just around the corner from the Royal crescent – perfect for a slower breakfast of brunch spot.
