Hostel recipes that won’t break the bank
Trying to travel on a budget? We have kitchen facilities set up for your use so you can do just that. While our city is full of amazing food options, sometimes it is easier to just nip to the shop and whip something up, rather than splashing out your cash all in one go. We all want a little adventure despite this cost-of-living crisis, and we are here to help. Here are some creative ideas for those wholesome microwave meals, from experienced hostelers:
- Microwaveable Mexican Rice with Cheddar and Tortilla Chips
This “recipe” was recently discovered as a lunch break special by yours truly. Grab a pack of Mexican style rice (microwaves in 2 minutes), some shredded cheese if you like, and a bag of tortilla chips. It’s an excellent combination, and easily made gluten free and vegan if that’s your thing!
- Toast with Chipotle Paste and Cheddar
Honestly, it’s great. Basically, an open cheese toasty with a little kick – that chipotle paste adds just the right amount of spice. Add the paste and the cheese right after toasting so the bread is hot enough to melt the cheese or bang the whole thing in the convection oven for extra meltiness.
- Beans on toast
A comforting classic and perhaps the easiest of hostel recipes – what’s not to love? Unless you don’t like beans of course. In that case, maybe try one of the other options on here. Back to the beans on toast though, this is an excellent cosy and quick recipe that you can throw together and be sat enjoying in front of our tv in no time. Top it off with some cheese (yum) and you have a winner.
- Classic Soup and Bread
You can’t go wrong with a bowl of soup, especially in the winter. Grab yourself a nice bread roll, maybe some butter, and you’ve got a cheap and easy dinner. Mix it up and get a dhal and some flatbread!
- Jacket Potatoes
Nothing beats a jacket potato, especially on a cold day. You can fill it with whatever you want – beans and cheese, tuna and sweetcorn, chilli, the world is your oyster! Probably don’t fill it with oysters though?
*a friendly reminder not to put foil in the microwave – it never ends well. We hope you enjoy these recipes and your stay at our hostel!
