Turning 60: A New Chapter of Womanhood

Six months into being 60, I find myself reflecting on what this milestone truly means. In many ways, it’s just a number, yet it has also brought a subtle shift in how I approach life. After reducing my working hours to four days a week, I’ve discovered a new sense of balance. This isn’t just about having more free time; it’s about choosing to fill that time with activities and experiences that nourish both my body and soul. As I continue to evolve, I’ve found that self-care has taken on a deeper meaning, and I want to share some thoughts and ideas around how I’ve embraced this new chapter.

Embracing Change

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of staying open to change. At 60, it can be easy to stick with routines we’ve had for decades, but there’s a kind of magic in stepping outside of those familiar patterns. For me, that has meant reducing my work schedule and diving into new physical activities like boxing, and weights. These aren’t things I would have imagined myself doing even a year ago, but they’ve added an invigorating energy to my days.

Change doesn’t have to be drastic—sometimes it’s as simple as adjusting the way we approach our health or work-life balance. I encourage anyone approaching this milestone to explore new passions and give yourself permission to grow in unexpected ways.

Physical Wellness

Staying active is a cornerstone of my self-care. I’ve been practicing yoga for a while now, and it continues to centre me physically and mentally. But more recently, I’ve fallen in love with boxing and a bit of kickboxing, which offer a unique combination of strength, agility, and focus. It’s been empowering to challenge myself in new ways and see how my body responds.

At 60, our bodies may not be the same as they were in our 30s or 40s, but that doesn’t mean we can’t push ourselves in new directions. Whether it’s yoga, boxing, walking, or swimming, I encourage everyone to find an activity that makes them feel strong and alive. It’s less about the intensity and more about consistency and joy.

Mental Wellness

Mental wellness is just as important as physical health. Reducing my work hours has given me space to reconnect with myself and others in a meaningful way. It’s incredible how freeing up just one day a week can shift your mindset. That extra day has allowed me to focus on hobbies, connect with friends, and simply be present with myself. It’s a form of self-care that has had a profound impact on my mental clarity and stress levels.

We often get so caught up in the idea of being productive that we forget to slow down and simply enjoy the moment. As I’ve learned, taking time to unwind and reflect is essential for overall well-being.

Self-Care as a Priority

Next month, I’ll be heading to Ibiza for a fitness week—a decision rooted in self-care. It’s important to take time for ourselves, whether that means traveling to a new destination or simply carving out a quiet afternoon at home. Self-care can look different for everyone, but the key is to prioritise it.

I used to feel a twinge of guilt at the thought of indulging in a week of fitness and relaxation while my husband was working. But I’ve realized that when I care for myself, I come back more energised and present for the people I love. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary.

Celebrating Small Wins

Turning 60 has also taught me to appreciate the small wins in life. My birthday was a simple, low-key affair, and I was perfectly content with that. I think there’s a kind of pressure we sometimes feel to make every celebration extravagant, but I’ve come to value the beauty of quieter moments.

Whether it’s taking a walk in nature, enjoying a good book, or having a quiet meal with loved ones, these small moments are where true joy often lies. At 60, I’ve found peace in letting go of the need for grand celebrations and instead focusing on what truly matters to me.

Supporting Your Community

Another aspect of self-care is connecting with and supporting others. I’ve found a lot of joy in giving back to my local community. Whether it’s through involvement with local initiatives or simply offering support to friends and family, there’s a sense of fulfilment that comes from being part of something bigger than yourself.  I am lucky to belong to a wonderful YMCA in Bath and I never cease to be amazed at the scale and scope of the work they do – I am so proud to support what they do.

For me, it’s not about grand gestures but small acts of kindness that create a sense of community and connection. At this stage in life, giving back feels like a natural extension of caring for myself—because when we lift others up, we lift ourselves as well.

Looking Ahead

As I look ahead to the coming years, I feel excited about continuing this journey of self-care and exploration. Whether it’s continuing my boxing classes, spending more time travelling, or pursuing new passions, I plan to keep evolving.

Turning 60 has been less about slowing down and more about shifting my focus. I’m more intentional about how I spend my time and more attuned to what truly brings me joy. For anyone else embarking on this journey, I encourage you to embrace change, prioritise self-care, and celebrate the small wins. Life at 60 is a beautiful new chapter, and it’s ours to shape.
